Author/Director Interview - FRAZER LEE
Updated: Jul 27, 2018
Today on the Witch Haunt, I’m delighted to interview a writer/director whose debut novel THE LAMPLIGHTERS was a Bram Stoker Award Finalist for Best First Novel and a Book Pipeline Finalist. His other published works include the Amazon #1 horror/thriller PANIC BUTTON: The Official Movie Novelization, novels THE JACK IN THE GREEN and THE SKINTAKER, and the Daniel Gates Adventures series of novellas. Please welcome FRAZER LEE!
WH: Hi, Frazer! I’m so excited to have you on the blog. Thanks for being here. Please give us a brief introduction of your fabulous self:
FL: Thank you for the fabulous invite! I am a novelist, screenwriter and filmmaker lucky enough to have been nominated for a Stoker Award (for my first novel The Lamplighters). My movie credits include the feature film Panic Button, and the short films On Edge, Red Lines, Simone and The Stay.
WH: Congratulations on all your success so far! What other career would you have if not writing/directing?
FL: I always fancied being an astronaut. I reckon all the hours of toiling in solitude and semi-darkness as a writer might have made me a suitable candidate for deep space exploration.
WH: Not to mention exploration of all those characters’ minds. Which of your works (novels, films, directing endeavors) are you most proud of?
FL: I hope to be proud of the next thing I do. I try not to look back too much, as I spot all the flaws in what has gone before.
WH: We are works in progress, aren’t we? Speaking of which, how have you changed as a person from your early life until now?
FL: I am several pounds heavier and I lopped off the seven year growth of dreadlocks 18 years ago. Aside from that, I am still essentially the same adorably annoying psychopath I have always been.
WH: LOL. Forgive me, but now I have to do a little detective work. I’m back. Would that be you in the dreadlock pic? JHow do you like your coffee? Do you have a favorite libation? What’s your favorite dessert?
FL: I like my coffee strong, and often. I used to enjoy drinking whisky, but it doesn’t really agree with me these days. So my favourite meal used to be coffee followed by whisky. Now it is coffee followed by yet more coffee. Did I mention I like coffee?
WH: You did, yes. But do you like coffee? JOkay, so who have been your biggest influences in your film career?
FL: I remember seeing John Carpenter’s Prince of Darknessat the cinema when I was a teen. I took a date, and she kept grabbing my arm at every jump scare. After the screening, I had bruises up and down my arms, and I was covered in popcorn (buckets of the stuff were flying in the air too, every time there was a scare). I had one overriding thought – I want to do that.
WH: That’s a great story and source of motivation! How did you get your start in directing films?
FL: I got my first ever production runner position on a Doctor Whospin-off thanks to producer Keith Barnfather at Reeltime Pictures. I then worked for several years, often unpaid, on various film sets to get as much knowledge and experience as I could. I wrote a screenplay adaptation of Christopher Fowler’s short story On Edge for my MA in Screenwriting assignment and sent it to him, asking for the rights to make the film. He graciously granted me an option. And that’s how I got started – with the kindness of one person who saw potential in what I was doing and gave me a break. Sometimes, that’s all it takes to push you to push yourself.
WH: Can’t argue with that. By the way, my novel WAKE THE HOLLOW would make a great movie. JWhat’s your favorite Halloween tradition?
FL: I love growing pumpkins, carving them, and then cooking the flesh in a delicious soup. (The pumpkins taste quite pleasant too, muah ha ha!)
WH: Ohhh, you and me both. Pumpkin soup…pumpkin everything! Muah haha! What is the witchiest thing about you (we’re all a little witchy)?
FL: Definitely my cat, Pippin. He’s ‘half in, half out’ if you catch my drift (and is sitting on my lap right now, as I attempt to type this).
WH: A hedgewitch kitty. I love it. Who’s your favorite Addams Family character? J
FL: I love Morticia. An inspiration to us all, she’s much more than a character and really more of a lifestyle guru. Morticia Addams for President!
WH: No kidding. I’ll make the buttons! What do you feel makes the perfect horror film?
FL: A character you care about in a world that’s atmospheric and visually compelling with a problem that has you eating your fingernails off as you watch them attempt to overcome it. With a kick-ass soundtrack. The End.
WH: Whenever I’ve written myself into a corner, I remind myself that it really is that simple. What is the most awesome thing happening in your life right now that you’d like to share with us?
FL: I am truly blessed to be working on a couple of film and writing projects that I can’t say anything about in case I jinx them forever. Also, this year’s pumpkin patch is coming along an absolute (trick or) treat.
WH: Good luck with those gourds, my friend! What’s next for you? We can’t wait to see what you have coming up!
FL: My latest short film The Stay(which won Best Short at Changing Face International Film Festival) plays at Dragon Con Film Festival in Atlanta USA this August. The Lucifer Glassand The Leper Window– the first two novellas in my occult horror series The Daniel Gates Adventures– are out now in one volume from Crossroad Press. The next two novellas The Lilyth Mirrorand The Lucifer Gate, will be out soon, also from Crossroad Press.
